The eastern spotted skunk is often confused with the more common striped skunk which is a different species. As you can see from the diagram above, compared to spotted skunks, striped skunks are larger in size (although young striped skunks are often confused with spotteds) and lack the distinctive spots compared to stripes along their body. Did you know that it is estimated that spotted skunks have undergone a >99% decline range-wide since the 1940's. Unfortunately, because we know so little about the eastern spotted skunk, we still don't completely understand the reason for this decline or even where the species still persists.
